The victory slipped away by just a few centimeters, but even in the last stage the Bergamo native Alessandro Romele confirmed himself among the most in-form sprinters of the Vuelta España. Sunday, September 13 at the finish line in Granada the 23-year-old from Lovere was indeed just a step away from victory, beaten by a few centimeters by the Norwegian Tobias Johannessen. For Romele, this is the sixth top ten finish in the 2026 edition of the Vuelta: twice second, twice fourth, once sixth, and once eighth. These placements are to be added to the 11th place in the opening time trial.

As for the general classification, the last stage crowned the Spaniard Enrico Mas who, after finding himself in the red jersey following the disastrous crash that took Tadej Pogacar out of the race, never relinquished the lead, finishing with a 2’15” advantage over the Slovenian Primoz Roglic and 2’44” over the Austrian Felix Gall. Romele finished 92nd at 3h31’07’’, the other Bergamo rider in the race, Lorenzo Rota, 100th at 3h48’44’’.
