The podium slipped away by a few centimeters, but the achievement remains: on Wednesday, August 26, Alessandro Romele from Bergamo (Astana) was among the protagonists of the sprint in the fifth stage of the Vuelta España, the 173.4 km Costa Dorada-Roquetes, finishing in fourth place behind British rider Matthew Brennan (Visma) who won in a sprint, thus securing his second victory in this edition, after Sunday’s. Brennan preceded Belgian Jordi Meeus and Italian Vincenzo Albanese, who finished just ahead of the Bergamo rider, in fourth. For the almost 23-year-old from Lovere, another strong performance after the one on Saturday 22 in the prologue that opened the Vuelta, where he finished 11th.
Also at the finish with the group was the other Bergamo rider in the race, Lorenzo Rota, who finished in 35th place

Returning to Wednesday’s stage, the other Bergamo rider in the race, Lorenzo Rota (Lotto), completed the stage with the group in 35th position. Tadej Pogacar easily maintained the red jersey as classification leader and his solid advantage of 3’21” over compatriot Primoz Roglic. Romele is 72nd at 24’ 38”, Rota 79th at 25’ 03”. Thursday will see the sixth medium-mountain stage from Alcossebre to Castellò, 177.4 km long.
